Tikis Turn 50.

Can’t you believe that Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room will be turning 50 years old today?! We can’t either, but it just goes to show how timeless classic Disneyland attractions are. They have wonderful stories to tell and the Tiki Room’s story begins with the the Tiki’s themselves that are outside the attraction. We see and hear them all the time. They greet us as we walk into the Tiki Room itself and we know that they are all powerful as we finish watching the show. However, do we really know anything about the Tiki Gods who dwell there? If you don’t here’s a quick list and description of who’s who.

• Pele: She is the Hawaiian fire goddess that lives in the kilauea volcano and likes to torment her neighbor.

• Ngendei: He is the creator of all the gods. He balances the whole world all while getting tormented by Pele.

• Maui: Maui is the Polynesian Trickster who gave people time and roped the playful Sun.

• Rongo: He is the god of agriculture, and the provider of food. He also discovered electricity.

• Koro: Koro is the Midnight Dancer who casts spells on all ladies and men to learn dance.

• Tangaroa-ru: She is also known as Mapui-Kaufanga in Maori tales, she is the goddess of the east winds, which bring in rain.

• Hina Kaluua: She is the Hawaiian mistress of rain, from Hilo, Hawai’i. Her daughter, Hina, is the mother of the trickster, Maui.

• Tangaroa: He is the father of all gods and goddesses. He takes form in the shape of a tree (a tree that no one ever did see).
