Will Disney take on YA literature with a return to “The Black Cauldron”?

Variety reports that Disney is returning to The Chronicles of Pyrdain by Lloyd Alexander, meaning (maybe!) we’ll get to see a little more of The Black Cauldron.

The Chronicles of Pyrdain is a five-volume novel, and The Black Cauldron is based off of the first two books. The story follows the protagonist Taran as he grows up in a mythical land alongside other characters like Princess Eilonwy and Fflewddur Fflam. While the 1985 film already brought the series partially to big screens, Disney seems to be interested in further adapting the other books into movies – perhaps re-adapting or even continuing the story of the original movie.

Many consider The Chronicles of Pyrdain children’s literature, but others also see it as young adult literature for the way it traces Taran’s experiences growing up. If this is true, Disney’s interest in the series may spring from the recent young adult literature adaptation craze with franchises like The Hunger Games and Divergent. The Chronicles of Pyrdain fits right in with popular young adult fantasy themes, so Disney could very well be turning towards a new adaptation of the series.

This may mean that we get to see The Black Cauldron in live action, or that the story of the original movie will be continued, or that – finally – Princess Eilonwy will officially be made a Disney Princess.

Only time will tell how, or even if, Disney will tackle the series once again, but one thing’s for sure – the story of Taran and The Black Cauldron is definitely not finished yet!
